Just to say ‘Inspirational’! Thank you to everyone there for making us so welcome. I was particularly interested in the TLC. This is a really creative idea and must have much potential in drawing in parents and other members of the community.

I would like to know more about how the school uses volunteers and whether local employers are involved in this.

The tour got off to an inspiring start with a visit to a school which is working very hard to make community working into a reality. Talking about ‘community partnership’ is a whole lot easier than actually doing it (bit like most things in life I guess), but the staff and students at Springhill gave the Northern Tour delegates a very real feel of how to turn aspirations into reality.  The visit to the TLC centre was the highlight for me as the concept is just stunning in its simplicity but has clearly taken a whole lot of hard work to get going. I think schools can sometimes become too insular and inward looking, it may just be a feature of large institutions in general. But then we meet the idea of taking some of the expertise and caring ethos from the school and moving it outside to a less threatening, maybe even neutral space in order to engage young people who are in danger of losing touch with learning altogether.  We will no doubt see a lot of other things on this tour (currently the convoy is en route to Shropshire), but we may not see anything more important that the TLC.

It was very interesting to see a learning platform being used to support the school extending its reach into the community. This is an ideal project for schools starting out on the first steps of using a learning platform.

The greatest testament to an idea being embedded and well accepted by all stakeholders is spending 5 minutes talking to a polite and articulate young person - Dave - who informs at the end he has attended the centre in the past for anger management and exclusions. Transformational … You bet!
